Somsak Hanumas (born 1980) is a Thai painter.
The artwork becomes the starting point for the aesthetic experience, rather than its culmination.
As a recent graduate, Somsak decided to take up his brushes and give free rein to his calling, and has never looked back.
He has now been painting for over 18 years using a technique he taught himself.
After painting a background on the canvas, Somsak adds numerous coloured dots, scattering them across the canvas in a gradient pattern, the general idea of which is firmly fixed in his mind.
After this stage, Somsak, using a finer brush, traces series of overlapping lines over the dots until the entire canvas is covered.
This work, the length and repetitive nature of which require extreme patience, suits him as it gives him time to reflect on the meaning of his painting and, beyond that, on the meaning of life and the passing of time.
On average, a canvas takes between 8 and 12 weeks to complete. Somsak often says that the source of his art lies in the landscapes that have left a lasting impression on him.
A beach in Thailand, a field battered by the monsoon, the edge of a jungle… all whilst adding a personal touch, his own perspective.
Somsak Hanumas’s works have already found their way into the Whalroos Foundation in Finland, the Mikati Collection in Lebanon, the Bernard Magrez Collection in Bordeaux, the Vermeer Collection in the Netherlands, and, not least, the LVMH Group, where they adorn the walls of their boutiques.
