SCULPTURE “EVE” by André EIJBERG (1929–2012)
Bronze sculpture with a brown patina, resting on a black marble plinth; monogrammed, numbered “2/6” and dated “01” beneath the base.
Included is the artist’s certificate of authenticity dated 29 January 2002, featuring a photograph of the work signed by the artist, and the artist’s catalogue, in which the work appears on page 6.
Provenance: Private collection
Dimensions: approx. 47 x 24 x 20 cm
Good condition, well maintained
In his early career, Eijberg created large ceramic panels for public and private buildings.
He quickly moved away from strict realism. His sculptures began to simplify the lines of the human body (often female) and the animal world (particularly birds).
Volume became more important than detail.
Eijberg diversified his media to explore new textures. He worked meticulously with bronze, but also carved directly into Carrara marble and dense woods such as Pyrenean boxwood.
His style reaches its full potential. His works take on curved, fluid and gentle forms that evoke natural elements (waves, wind, feminine silhouettes) on the cusp of abstraction. Their polished surfaces invite the viewer to touch them.
He has made his mark in the public realm through major commissions in Belgium, where his substantial bronze sculptures blend harmoniously into urban and university landscapes (such as on the UCLouvain campus).
