Hugo Minder was born on 23 November 1950 in the Vosges and moved to Clermont at the age of 19. He became an amateur painter at the age of 30; highly figurative in this early period, using monochrome tones, he was concerned solely with capturing the likeness of his subjects, creating red chalk portraits, sepia still lifes and blue ink landscapes.
He enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Beauvais in the studios of L’Orme and Guidi, whom he met in 1999. He took part with them in outdoor sessions with models, working on scenes lit by candlelight, which required very rapid work as the light and the casting of shadows changed rapidly as the wax melted.
He continued his training in Paris under the master pastel artist Jean-Pierre Merat, who introduced him to Paul Ambille. The latter provided him with the foundations for a style characterised by greater freedom of movement, interpretation and creativity. He won numerous prizes, particularly at the Oise art fairs, where he is well known.
He found himself on the threshold of figurative abstraction and became capable of exploring concepts such as ‘voluptuousness’, ‘madness’, ‘metamorphosis’ and ‘symphony’.
He has painted outdoor murals, such as on the transformer on the road to Etouy, Fitz-James and Rémérangles, and on the village hall in Lieuvillers, as well as indoor murals, such as at the Dojo in Clermont and St Germain-en-Laye. He has exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris and at the Artitude, Hugues Capet and Thuillier galleries, and collaborates with UNESCO on a partnership between French and Japanese schools.
