In the summer of 1913, Marie Vassilieff took her students to work in Spain: Fontarabia, Pasajes, San Sebastian. She brought back notebooks and paintings. Where the Spanish Landscape scans the land, this Port of Spain opens out onto the sea. In the foreground, the water; in the background, the village and the port; in the centre, a red and black tugboat whose mass contrasts with the light-coloured flat tints of the sky and the façades. The composition is both Cubist, with its fragmentation of planes and simultaneous view, and Futurist, in the mechanical energy released by the boat. It was precisely this type of painting that Vassilieff exhibited in Russia at the end of 1915: very similar subjects rubbed shoulders with the Suprematist works of Tatline, Exter and Rodchenko. Exhibited at the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen-Basel in 2015, the painting shows Vassilieff at the height of her powers, capable of synthesising in a single canvas the two great plastic revolutions of her time.
