Marie Vassilieff represented herself as an orante, her hands outstretched on either side of her portrait doll. The two faces respond to each other: the same azure eyes, slightly darker in the doll. It's a mise en abyme: a portrait squared. The silver ether background recalls the delicate eggshell backgrounds of his friend Foujita. While Marie's gaze seems to be focused on a spectacle that delights her, that of her doll betrays concern. This painting, which adorned Claude Bernès's dining room, is the emblematic work in the collection. It features on the cover of the reference work Marie Vassilieff (Bernès et Noël, 2017) and has been exhibited in Paris, Berlin, Tokyo and Saint Petersburg. It is the work that founded the legend.
