In 1931, a young man of twenty-three entered Marie Vassilieff's life. Eric, the blond-haired, blue-eyed son of a magistrate, had a scar on his nose that reinforced his classic charm. At forty-seven, Marie sees him as an elder son as well as a role model. As Pierre's tutor, she invents pranks with him. But the relationship remained on hold: Vassilieff could not free himself from antagonistic feelings towards homosexuality. The painting shows him standing, displaying a sex that we cannot guess at, holding a woman's head in his right hand, which he throws into the flames, and a long green flower in the other. Black background, red sun, white clouds: the style is reminiscent of Cranach. This Modern Salome does not throw the Baptist's head, but that of Marie Vassilieff herself. It is the exact mirror image of the portrait of Juliette Germain, painted two years later. Exhibited in 1971, the painting was in Claude Bernès's flat, hanging to the right of the front door.
