Description
Beautiful nimcha sword with gold damascened blade and rhinoceros horn hilt
Morocco, Alawite period, circa 1830-1850
Beautiful, long, slightly curved, flat-backed steel blade, decorated on the upper third with a wide gold damascened (koftgari) register on both sides; rhinoceros horn hilt, chased silver ferrule and gilt brass guard with descending quillons. Wooden scabbard clad in green velvet, with silver chased and enamelled interlace mounting (chape and bouterolle), two suspension rings, strap (hizâm) woven in blue silk with geometric motifs, decorated with long blue silk tassels.
