Dawud Al-'Aziz Al-Antaki (d.1597)First part of the Tadhkirat 'Uli al-Albâb wa-l-Jâmi' li-l-'Ajab wa-l-'Ujâb (Medical treatise) Morocco, dated AH 1204 (AD 1789) Arabic manuscript on paper, 294 leaves calligraphed in Maghribi script, 19 lines per page, divided into four chapters. The manuscript opens with an illuminated frontispiece (sarlowh). Dated on the colophon. Bound in red morocco with flap, decorated with an embossed central mandorla and gilt fillets. 22.5 x 18 cm (8.86 x 7.09 in.) Condition: Very good overall condition, with several copyists. Provenance : Sale Gros & Delettrez, 13 December 2004, n°322. Although famous, Dawud al-Antaki's work has been relatively little copied: one copy is kept in the Bibliothèque Royale al-Hassania du Maroc (Ms. 89; cf. Sijelmassi, Enluminures des manuscrits royaux au Maroc, 1987, p. 21), and another, dated 1838, in the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha (Add. MS 12187). This treatise brings together a vast corpus of traditional medicinal knowledge, describing the therapeutic virtues of plants, herbs and other substances. This Arabic manuscript on paper, devoted to the therapeutic properties of plants, herbs and natural substances, appears to have been relatively rarely copied. Comparable examples are preserved in the Royal al-Hassania Library, Morocco (Ms. 89), and at the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha (Add. MS 12187).
