Description
Abbasid Qur'an leaf mounted as an album page Probably Near East or North Africa, 9th-10th century; Safavid Iran margins, 18th century On parchment (vellum), calligraphied in brown ink in kufic script, over nine lines; the vocalisation indicated by dots in red ink. Mounted in a later period in a richly illuminated frame, with continuous decoration of plant scrolls treated with gold and stencil. Leaf: 20.2 x 30.7 cm - Parchment: 13.8 x 17.8 cm Text from Qur'an, sura ad-Dukhan ("The Smoke", s. 44), from the end of verse 16 to the beginning of verse 33. Provenance : Private collection, Paris. This folio is similar to one in the Holy Quran Academy in Sharjah (inv. KFQ 22 / no. 284), which also combines an early Qur'anic text on vellum with added Safavid floral margins, and to a folio in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (inv. W.553.15B), which shows a similar re-use of an early Qur'anic fragment in a later montage. In the seventeenth century, Persian workshops, continuing their erudite taste for the vestiges of the Islamic past, regularly incorporated ancient fragments on parchment into refined compositions in which the illuminated margins played a dual role of aesthetic enhancement and scholarly musealisation. A Qur'an folio on vellum in Kufic script with later Safavid illuminated margins, Probably Near East or North Africa, Qur'anic text 9th-10th century AD; margins added in Safavid Iran, 18th century. Comparable folios are preserved in the Holy Quran Academy, Sharjah (inv. KFQ 22 / 284) and the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (inv. W.553.15B).
