Description
Ibex bowl Iran or Iraq, 12th century With curved sides and annular base, in siliceous ceramic covered with a whitish slip and painted in polychrome under a transparent glaze. In the centre of the basin, a beautiful ibex is advancing towards the left, its coat rendered in turquoise blue enhanced with cobalt and surrounded by black; the animal is set against a background of stylised flowers and shrubs in cobalt, green and manganese brown. The reverse, with a low ring foot, bears in its centre a calligraphic word in kufi in oxide and retains an oval label from an old collection. Condition: intact, slight chips to the rim. H. 4.5 x D. 10 cm (1.8 x 3.9 in.) Provenance : Private collection of Mr A., Paris, acquired from Galerie Brimo de Laroussilhe, 1985. A fritware bowl, painted in underglaze polychrome with a striding ibex amid stylised foliage in turquoise ; the underside with a Kufic inscription in oxide and an old collection label. Iran or Iraq, 12th century.
