Description
Large octagonal engraved bronze mortar
Khorassan, eastern Iran, 12th - 13th century
In cast bronze and inlaid with red copper, decorated on each side with animated cartouches of animals, resting on a base decorated with epigraphic cartouches in kufic script, with four protruding bosses serving as a grip for handling. The upper rim features an epigraphic band in Naskh cursive, now partially erased by use.
Condition: red patina, wear from use, small old knocks.
Size: 13.5 x 18.5 cm (5.3 x 7.3 in.).
Used for medical, culinary or pharmaceutical purposes, these mortars were part of the standard equipment in literate homes, madrasas and hospitals.
