Description
Large octagonal engraved bronze mortar Khorassan, eastern Iran, 12th - 13th century In cast bronze and inlaid with red copper, decorated on each side with animated cartouches of animals, resting on a base decorated with epigraphic cartouches in kufic script, with four protruding bosses serving as a grip for handling. The upper rim features an epigraphic band in Naskh cursive, now partially erased by use. Condition: red patina, wear from use, small old knocks. Size: 13.5 x 18.5 cm (5.3 x 7.3 in.). Used for medical, culinary or pharmaceutical purposes, these mortars were part of the standard equipment in literate homes, madrasas and hospitals. An octagonal cast bronze mortar inlaid with red copper, decorated with figural cartouches enclosing animals, Eastern Iran, Khurasan, 12th-13th century.
