Description
Bowl with historiated decoration and poetic inscriptions
Iran, Qajar art, 19th century
Polychrome enamelled copper decorated with Persian inscriptions in reserve on a white background. Flared on a small heel, the bowl is decorated on the outside with a succession of figured medallions depicting characters, sovereigns, heroes and fantastic animals, separated by blue and gold star networks. Inscribed cartouches identify certain scenes, including:
'Azîz of Egypt and Yûsuf'; 'Rustam and Isfandiyâr'; 'Shâh Salîm'; 'Shams al-Dîn Tabrîzî'; 'khâna-yi khumâr' ('tavern of drunkenness'); 'Shaykh San'ân'; 'Bâbâ Bayât'.
An inscription running beneath the outer lip indicates, in an obviously apocryphal manner, that the bowl was made in the year AH 532 (1137-1138) under the reign of a "Sultan Abû Sa'îd". The text is followed by verses borrowed from two ghazals by Hâfiz. Another inscription, placed around the inner base, repeats a Persian couplet.
Condition: accidents, wear and restorations.
