Description
LOÏS HUTTON (1893–1972), ‘Autumn Vines’, c. 1920, oil on cardboard. Accompanied by the preparatory study in graphite on paper, which is titled. A few pinpricks on the preparatory study. H: 29 W: 39 cm (H: 21 W: 26 cm for the drawing). Provenance: Auction at the Montmorency Valley Auction House – Loïs Hutton Studio – 19 January 2021. Note: Loïs Hutton is, above all, an iconic figure amongst dancers of the interwar period. Of English origin, she made her debut at ‘Les Vendredis de la Danse’ in Paris, before opening ‘L’autre Théâtre’ in Saint-Paul-de-Vence a few years later. Scott Fitzgerald, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce were among those who frequented this unmissable theatre on the ‘French Riviera’. An avant-garde dancer, as well as a choreographer and costume designer, she maintained close ties with the dancers and artists of her time, including Pablo Picasso, Jean Renoir, André Breton and Salvador Dalí. Her Anglo-Saxon heritage enabled her to forge very close ties with two English painters working in Saint-Paul-de-Vence: John Duncan Fergusson and Leslie Hunter, whose influences are widely evident in Loïs’s work.
