Description
ERIC THAKE (1904–1982), ‘Oil sheiks to Bahrain?’, 1969, Linocut in black ink on paper, titled, signed and dated. H: 14.5 W: 20 cm Provenance: Private collection A leading figure in Australian modernism, Eric Thake developed a body of print work characterised by humour, poetry and an unconventional perspective on everyday life. In 1941, unable to obtain greeting cards due to wartime shortages, he produced his first linocut for his friends and family. This initiative became an annual tradition, continuing until 1975. Conceived as private correspondence, these original compositions bear witness to the artist’s graphic ingenuity and constitute a witty chronicle of Australian society of his time. Now held in major international public collections, these cards rank among the most endearing works in the history of 20th-century Australian printmaking. Bringing together thirty-five years of creative output, from 1941 to 1975, this collection is truly exceptional, offering a continuous overview of a rare series originally intended for a select circle of correspondents.
