Description
MEDICI (FRANCESCO DE, 1541–1587, 2nd Grand Duke of Tuscany). Autograph letter signed ‘Principe de Fiorenza di Siena’, addressed to Giulio de’ Medici in Arezzo, Florence, 4 July 1564, in Italian, approving his plan for a tour to supervise or inspect the ‘lavori’, offering him advice on the preservation of grain reserves in all the fortresses, and recommending that he clear out and replenish the stocks of salted meat as he had done in previous years. Ink on paper, one page, quarto, with full address page, paper seal. Francesco, eldest son of Cosimo de’ Medici, first Grand Duke of Tuscany (1519–1574), had officially assumed most of his father’s power in May 1564, when Cosimo, overwhelmed by the deaths of two other sons, had effectively abdicated in his favour. Gulio, Cosimo’s illegitimate cousin, was the son of Lorenzino de’ Medici, who was assassinated in 1548.
