Description
19th century Orientalist school after Ferdinand WACHSMUTH. Episode of the Algiers expedition: the prisoner. On 4 July 1830, the day the Fort l'Empereur was taken, a French officer stepped aside and was taken by the Bedouins, who were about to cut off his head, when the explosion of the fort sent them fleeing. The moment depicted is when the Arabs, struck by his impassive demeanour, address him with their final insults before delivering the fatal blow. Oil on canvas with the stamped mark on the reverse: "P. Souty Fils - Place du Louvre à Paris" (Pierre-Prosper SOUTY Fils was the most famous framer of the Second Empire and supplier to all the salons). Chipping, missing, tear along the upper edge. 70 x 97 cm. After the painting exhibited at the Salon of 1833.
