‘Capitainerie Royale Chambord’ Armband design printed on canvas, with a fleur-de-lis in the centre surrounded by a garland of foliage. Under glass, in a round, gilded frame, marked in pencil on the reverse: ‘Central section of an armband belonging to a Guard of the Chambord Estate… belonging to Mr Duices (?) known as…’. ABE Ø: 13 cm In 1542, King François I established royal captaincies tasked with guarding and preserving the forests and parks for royal hunting. There was one captain and three guards to oversee the Chambord estate. In 1777, Louis XVI abolished this captaincy. Expert: Gaëtan Brunel
