Description
Pennant of the 3rd Company of the 158th Infantry Regiment, which took part in the attack on the Bois du Bouc near Tahure in September 1918. A white and blue silk pennant, embroidered with gold thread, worn and frayed, framed with a Croix de Guerre 14–18 bearing two commendations. On the back of the frame is an envelope containing a visiting card belonging to Mr Henri Andre, a railway inspector and former quartermaster corporal in the 158th Infantry Regiment, with handwritten notes recounting the history of the pennant. Whilst on leave, he was replaced by Corporal Le Pon, who was killed on 27 September during the attack on the Bois du Bouc in the Marne, near Tahure. Corporal Jean Joseph Marie Le Pon fell that day, and this pennant was found beneath his remains in the German lines two days later whilst the bodies were being recovered. Mr Henri André explains that upon demobilisation, when the company received a new pennant, this one was handed over to him as he was the most senior officer.
