Description
Cap belonging to the Reverend Cyril J F Holmes, an English chaplain of the York and Lancaster Regiment. An English chaplain’s cap with a peak, made of khaki woollen serge, in the officer’s style, with a flap fastened by a cloth chin strap featuring a prong buckle and eyelets. It features his chaplain’s cap badge, an officer’s grade in blackened bronze, secured by two folding tabs. The cap has no other holes in the fabric or at the back, confirming that this is its original insignia. Beneath the sweatband, a tailor’s label bearing the name ‘Holmes’ and, unless misread, the regimental designation ‘YL8’. This could be the Reverend Cyril F. J. Holmes, DSO, attached to the 8th Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment. A small brown leather drawstring chin strap fastened with two wooden or corozo buttons. The lining is made of sand-coloured silk, with circular topstitching and, in the centre, the mark of the renowned tailor Herbert Johnson, 38 New Bond Street, London, who is still in business. Sweatband in green silk, topstitched and lined with white flannel, fastening with a thin red lace. Two khaki-lacquered ventilation eyelets on either side. A few moth holes, mainly on the top. A very rare, authentic and personalised cap. Showing signs of normal wear. British chaplain’s peaked cap attributed to Reverend Cyril J. F. Holmes of the York and Lancaster Regiment.
