Description
A fine late Germanic wheel-lock arquebus (mid-17th century). A sturdy, rifled octagonal barrel (7 basket-handle rifling grooves, calibre 20 balls per pound). Flat lock plate decorated with a battle scene set against the backdrop of a besieged city (the Siege of Bethulia during the Maccabean Revolt); in the foreground, on a shield, is a fine engraving depicting the beheading of Holofernes by Judith. Heavy trigger guard engraved with a sea creature. Guilloché-worked mainspring. Spring foot bracket running along the re-brazed chain. Guilloché-worked wheel spring. Gun mounted with iron parts, trigger guard with finger rest protecting a direct trigger. Beautiful dark walnut stock, smooth with delicate floral engravings on the right-hand side of the cheek piece. Fluted magazine with alternating wood and horn sections. Rear rail, horn cap, barely legible signature on an engraved band reading ‘Georg Gutav in XXX?’
