Claude Galle (1759-1815), one of the most talented Parisian bronzemakers and foundrymen of the late Louis XVI and Empire periods, became a master foundryman in 1786. In 1788, he took over the family workshop and expanded its activities, employing almost 400 craftsmen. He worked for the royal furniture repository and collaborated with the best craftsmen such as Pierre-Philippe Thomire. He supplied most of the bronze furnishings for the Château de Fontainebleau during the Empire and received numerous imperial orders for lights, clock boxes and vases for the palaces of Saint-Cloud, the Trianons, the Tuileries, Compiègne and Rambouillet.
