Description
Ethel CARRICK FOX (1872–1952) “Landscape (Kashmir)”, oil on canvas, signed lower left, 45 x 64 cm. (missing sections, restorations).
Ethel Carrick Fox (1872–1952) was born in England into a wealthy family and trained at the Slade School of Fine Art before settling in Paris with her husband, the Australian painter Emanuel Phillips Fox. His death in 1915 plunged her into deep mourning: the years that followed in Australia were marked by a period of withdrawal. Her travels to Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and, above all, India would help her emerge from this period. In Kashmir, where she stayed on two occasions between 1937 and 1939, living on a houseboat on the River Jhelum in Srinagar, she found what she herself described as ‘a paradise for painters’. This inner transformation is clearly reflected in her work, in which Carrick Fox adopts a palette of fiery vibrancy, accompanied by a liberated brushstroke.
