It was David Carrit who, in 1978, identified our painting with the one in the former collection of
Papillon de La Ferté collection. This excellent draughtsman, a pupil of Boucher, had one of the finest collections of the late eighteenth century.
of the late eighteenth century; the catalogue of his sale after his death is extremely precise: "N°81 DE BAR, Un bal
champêtre composé de 26 figures formant des groupes variés et agréables". This painting must be considered as
one of the master's most important, combining Watteau's spirit and colour.
