On the back a Watteau label and a n°4 and N°22 Provenance : - Sale of the cabinet of the late?(Papillon de La Ferté), Paris, Lebrun et Landais, 20 fevrier 1797, n°81; - Collection of the Viscountess of Courvalen 1884; - Remained with her descendants until 1997; - Sale Paris, Hotel Drouot, 23 June 1997, Mes Chayette et Cheval, no. 23 (285,000frs) - acquired at this date by the current owners. Bibliography: - Georges Wildenstein, Lancret, Paris 1924, N° 408 (Lancret); - J.Mathey, Antoine Watteau, peintures réapparues, Paris 1959, p.19. Exhibition: L'art au XVIIIè siècle, Paris, galerie Georges Petit, 1883-1884, n°118 (Lancret) It was David Carrit who, in 1978, identified our painting with the one in the former collection of Papillon de La Ferté collection. This excellent draughtsman, a pupil of Boucher, had one of the finest collections of the late eighteenth century. of the late eighteenth century; the catalogue of his sale after his death is extremely precise: "N°81 DE BAR, Un bal champêtre composé de 26 figures formant des groupes variés et agréables". This painting must be considered as one of the master's most important, combining Watteau's spirit and colour.
