Antoine-Louis Barye presented the plaster model of *Tiger Devouring a Gavial* at the 1831 Salon. This event is regarded by specialists as the true starting point of animal sculpture as we understand it today. Barye succeeded in establishing animal sculpture as a genre in its own right, on a par with the historical and biblical genres favoured at the Salon.
In 1836, following the work’s success, the model was scaled down, slightly modified and cast in bronze. Our copy bears the date ‘1836’, a mark found only on the earliest castings. Production continued during the sculptor’s partnership with Martin (27 copies) and subsequently posthumously.
