Description
Georges CLAIRIN (Paris 1843 – 1919 Belle-Île-en-Mer)
Soldier in the Franco-Prussian War
1870–1871
Watercolour on paper
45 x 30.5 cm
Signed “G. Clairin”; dated “1870–71”; inscribed “To my friend and comrade-in-arms Briand”; located “Paris” in the bottom right-hand corner
Initially a pupil of Isidore Pils at the École des Beaux-Arts, Georges Clairin went on to exhibit at the Salon from 1866 onwards.
Known for his Orientalist and Symbolist paintings, his portraits of Sarah Bernhardt and his monumental stage designs, he was an artist whose works were as varied as they were original.
Here, the artist presents a moving portrait of a French soldier during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, probably his comrade-in-arms Briand, to whom the sheet is dedicated.
