Executed between 1795 and 1796, our painting is based, with a few variations, on the one dated 1766 in the Museum of Princeton University in the United States. It is perhaps a counterpart to "Theseus kills the centaur", whose support and dimensions are identical: see Sotheby's London sales, 12 December 1974 and 11 June 1980.
We would like to thank Mr Joseph Assémat-Tessandier for kindly confirming the authenticity of our painting after direct examination and for helping us with its description.
