Description
Gnome & Rhône 800 AX2 side-car type Estafette - c.1939
Frame number: 167258
Engine number: 167258
4-stroke flat-twin engine with side valves, 4-speed gearbox.
From 1927 onwards, a revolution took place in the French army, with motorbikes slowly replacing the role of horses, particularly for liaison, reconnaissance and even combat missions.
A handful of French manufacturers tried to meet the military specifications with varying degrees of success, but Gnome-Rhône stood out from the competition with its first machine, the 500 D5A, followed in 1937 by the 800 AX2 coupled to Bernardet drive-wheel sidecars. This imposing, robust machine with its pressed steel frame was capable of carrying a payload of up to 350 kg.
Presented in its army livery, coupled to a Bernardet sidecar chassis and remanufactured Estafette body, engine not blocked, to be returned to working order. (Missing headlight glass, fender light and plate light, visible repair to sidecar mounting).
