CANNED BANQUET, HOLLAND COLONIAL WORK OF THE LATE 17th TO EARLY 18th CENTURIES, PROBABLY INDONESIA In carved ebony, the openwork back decorated with floral scrolls, resting on turned legs joined by a strut and terminating in balls; restorations H. 83.5 cm (32 ¾ in.) l. 117 cm (46 in.) A Dutch colonial carved ebony caned bench, late 17th-early 18th century, probably Indonesia This rare ebony caned bench, combining rich carved decoration with an openwork back and turned wooden crotch bars, is a rare example of European influences on furniture made in the territories controlled by the Dutch East India Company from the second half of the 17th century throughout the 18th century. The technique of turned wood furniture developed in Europe in the 1650s; the design is based on Dutch prototypes from the same period. The high-relief carving on our bench allows us to place its production date between the late 17th and early 18th centuries (see J. Veenendaal, Asian Art and Dutch taste, Gemmente Museum Den Haag, 2014, p. 24). Its predominantly floral decoration, based on models from Dutch goldsmiths or rich European or Indian brocades, suggests that it was produced in Batavia (now Indonesia), while the furniture combining flowers and animals is more likely to be found in pieces made on the south coast of India and in Ceylon. A bench similar to ours, dating from 1680-1720, is illustrated in J.
