Large, dismantlable country-style table
Solid pine
Late 18th century
H78 L208 W80 cm
Significant signs of age, marks, cracks and irregularities on the tabletop and base.
Its tabletop, made of wide planks, rests on two skid-shaped legs, joined by a longitudinal crossbar. The visible dowel joints on the base allow the
table’s components to be separated. This simple and sturdy construction is in keeping with its purpose as a functional piece of furniture.
The tabletop retains a particularly expressive patina: nicks, scratches, marks and variations in colour have accumulated over time. The irregular edges and the wear on the base contribute to the piece’s character.
A mark consisting of three initials, branded onto the base – presumably those of a former owner – is visible on the crossbar of the base.
This table is an example of ‘allmoge’, the Swedish rural furniture crafted by village carpenters for farms in Norrland. The tabletop, made of wide planks, rests on two legs joined by a crossbar; the visible dowels allow it to be dismantled, a sign of versatility in a home where rooms changed use with the seasons. Three initials branded onto the crossbar are a reminder of a former owner. The surface, marked by notches and variations in colour, is now the main source of its appeal for enthusiasts of folk furniture and unfinished surfaces.
