Description
Roberto Rigon Flat vase Glazed ceramic Bertoncella, Italy Date of creation: 1970 H18 W22 D4.5 cm A leading Italian post-war designer and ceramicist, Roberto Rigon developed, from the 1960s onwards, a body of work deeply influenced by sculptural research and formal experimentation. His collaboration with the Bertoncella workshop gave rise to a series of ceramics that have become emblematic of 1970s Italian design. This vase is distinguished by its openwork silhouette, composed of symmetrical organic forms, characteristic of the design language developed by Rigon during this period. The form, which is both geometric and biomorphic, subtly plays with the effects of light and transparency, transforming the utilitarian object into a true domestic sculpture. The nuanced glaze, in ivory tones accented with reddish-brown, emphasises the reliefs of the composition and highlights the sculptural quality of the piece as a whole. This combination of formal innovation and technical mastery testifies to the vital role played by Bertoncello in the revival of post-war Italian ceramics. Straddling the line between design and sculpture, Roberto Rigon’s creations are now among the most sought-after pieces from the Bertoncello workshop and powerfully illustrate the experimental spirit that characterised Italian design of the 1970s. The Bertoncello factory, based in Schiavon, at the heart of the Venetian ceramics district of Nove and Bassano del Grappa, revitalised its production in the 1960s by entrusting its designs to young creators. Roberto Rigon developed a series of openwork vases there, of which this flat model is a characteristic example: symmetrical, biomorphic forms, cut in such a way as to allow light to pass through the object. The ivory glaze, accented with reddish-brown, highlights the reliefs. A piece representative of 1970s Italian ceramic art, straddling the line between design and sculpture.
