Description
Attributed to Axel Larsson Sweden Swedish square stool with a chequerboard-patterned woven seat Circa 1930–1940 H42.5 W35 D35 cm Signs of wear and a few gaps in the weave; nails visible beneath the seat Axel Larsson was one of the interior designers who helped popularise Swedish Modern in the 1930s, notably through his designs produced by Svenska Möbelfabrikerna in Bodafors. This stool, attributed to his design, illustrates the combination of a simple structure and a woven seat, drawing on the tradition of Swedish rural seating. The chequerboard pattern adds interest to a strictly square form without resorting to ornamentation. A seemingly modest piece, representative of the gentle modernism that distinguished Sweden from German functionalism at the time.
