Description
NORWAY, 18th–19th CENTURY Daybed Carved and turned wood Upholstery and leather restored, late 19th – early 20th century. H80 L210 D83 cm Beautiful patina from use. Wear, marks, scratches and variations in the colour of the leather; signs of use, minor imperfections and previous restorations to the structure, consistent with the piece’s age. A substantial daybed with four turned posts, the lower crossbars of which feature a carved decoration of scales or stylised leaves. The sides are punctuated by slender balusters, and the base, designed as an openwork gallery, echoes this design language between two powerfully turned posts. This repertoire of turned wood, very common in Norwegian rural furniture, lends the piece an almost monumental architecture. The brown leather, secured with upholstery tacks and reupholstered at the turn of the 21st century, adds a warm patina to this piece, which is rare for its size.
