A sculptor on the Roman art scene of the 1960s, with affinities to Pop Art and Arte Povera, Mario Ceroli made raw pine – often Russian pine – his material of choice. In the early 1970s, he designed a collection of sculptural pine furniture for Poltronova, the Tuscan publisher of radical design (Sottsass, Archizoom, Superstudio). The ‘Rosa dei Venti’ is one of its flagship designs: a circular top measuring over one metre sixty, whose structure evokes a compass rose. The ‘CeroliPoltronova’ brand mark, applied by branding, authenticates the original edition.
