Description
Charles Catteau
Pair of ovoid vases
Ceramic with an enamelled decoration of cacti in yellow, green and black on a crackled white background
Mark of the Boch Frères La Louvière factory
D120 H32cm
Artistic director of the decorative department at Boch Frères in La Louvière from 1907 to 1948, the Frenchman Charles Catteau established the Belgian Keramis factory as one of the leading centres of Art Deco ceramics. His stylised floral and faunal designs, outlined in thick enamels against a crackled white background, were acclaimed at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1925. The cactus motif, rendered in a geometric style and repeated, illustrates this preference for nature simplified into graphic forms.
