Description

Charles Catteau Vase Ceramic decorated with bunches of grapes. Yellow and black slip glaze on a white crackled background. Marked ‘B.F.K. La Louvière Belgique. Ch.Catteau’ H30 cm The grape, a traditional motif in decorative ceramics, becomes, in Charles Catteau’s work, a pure interplay of forms: bunches reduced to outlined circles, geometrised leaves, and stark contrasts between yellow, black and crackled white. The ‘raised’ decoration, where the enamel is applied in relief, gives the surface a tactile depth characteristic of Keramis’s interwar production.
