Description
Jacques Pouchain (1925–2015) Still life plate Glazed ceramic with still life decoration 1955, Poët-Laval period H32 L22.1 cm In very good original condition Jacques Pouchain was a French ceramicist who notably modernised the Coursange pottery schools in Le Poët-Laval. His work forms part of the French ceramic movement of the 1950s, alongside that of Georges Jouve, Roger Capron, Jean Derval and Robert Picault. Based in Le Poët-Laval, in the Drôme, near the pottery centre of Dieulefit, Jacques Pouchain played a part in the post-war revival of French ceramics. His work stands alongside that of Georges Jouve, Roger Capron, Jean Derval and Robert Picault, who were then transforming ceramics into a field of modern experimentation. This dish interprets the still life – a classical genre of painting – using the vocabulary of its time: simplified forms, outlines and flat areas of glaze. A piece dated 1955, from the heart of the Poët-Laval period.
