Description
Robert Picault (1919–2000) Set of 25 ceramic pieces, comprising: 4 cups 5 small plates or saucers (one of which is ribbed) 9 handled bowls (including two with a textured finish) 4 bowls (including one with a textured finish) 1 candleholder 1 egg cup (with a textured finish) 1 lidded pot Signed ‘RP’ Circa 1955 Very good condition apart from the chips noted Robert Picault was a French ceramicist based in Vallauris. His work forms part of the Vallauris ceramics movement of the 1950s, alongside that of Roger Capron, Jean Derval and the Madoura workshop. Having settled in Vallauris after the war, Robert Picault devoted himself to functional ceramics, intended for the table and everyday use, in contrast to the one-off pieces for which the village was then renowned. His tableware is recognisable by its linear decoration, drawn with a swift, fluid stroke, which gives rhythm to simple, robust forms. This collection of twenty-five pieces allows one to appreciate its coherence, from the cups to the lidded jug. It reflects the period when Vallauris, centred around the Madoura workshop and the work of Roger Capron and Jean Derval, became the main centre of modern French ceramics.
