An American architect and winner of the Pritzker Prize in 1984, Richard Meier is known for his immaculately white buildings with their rigorous geometry. In the 1980s, the New York-based publisher Swid Powell invited architects to design tableware: Michael Graves, Robert Venturi, Arata Isozaki, Ettore Sottsass and Charles Gwathmey all took part. The King Richard candleholder transposes Meier’s design language onto the scale of an object, in a style reminiscent of the Vienna Secession, particularly Josef Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstätte. An architect’s creation, at the crossroads of silversmithing and postmodernism.
