Description
Richard Meier (born 1934) King Richard Candleholder Silver-plated metal Produced by Swid Powell Circa 1980 H23 cm Good original condition, slight surface scratches An American architect and winner of the Pritzker Prize in 1984, Richard Meier is known for his immaculately white buildings with their rigorous geometry. In the 1980s, the New York-based publisher Swid Powell invited architects to design tableware: Michael Graves, Robert Venturi, Arata Isozaki, Ettore Sottsass and Charles Gwathmey all took part. The King Richard candleholder transposes Meier’s design language onto the scale of an object, in a style reminiscent of the Vienna Secession, particularly Josef Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstätte. An architect’s creation, at the crossroads of silversmithing and postmodernism.
