Description
Anonymous Sculpture Carved and polished wood, tapering and slender in form, on a trapezoidal plinth. Mid-20th century H 25.6 cm. In good original condition. With its tapered silhouette, reaching upwards, this sculpture can be compared to Constantin Brancusi’s *L’Oiseau dans l’espace*, in which the sculptor reduces the idea of flight to an ascending line. It forms part of the mid-20th-century tradition of abstract wood sculpture, alongside the work of Jean Arp and Alexandre Noll, who sought the essential form in a material polished to a smooth finish. The trapezoidal plinth, acting as a geometric counterpoint, accentuates the form’s momentum. A discreet and elegant work.
