The Choupattes – cabbages mounted on chicken legs – are among Claude Lalanne’s most famous creatures: created in 1964 and exhibited at Jeanine Restany’s Galerie J, they epitomise the Lalannes’ surrealist humour, in which plants and animals metamorphose into one another. In this lithograph, François-Xavier Lalanne reinterprets his wife’s creation under the title *La Condition végétale*, as part of the *Allomorphoses* series, dedicated to such hybridisations. Published by La Hune, the iconic bookshop-gallery in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, only fifteen copies of the print were produced.
