Description
Michel Mars Box in the style of Pierre Bayle Terre sigillée Circa 2011 H20 L14 cm Very good condition; a few original white marks visible in the photographs. Terre sigillée, an ancient technique revived in the 20th century, involves coating the piece with an extremely fine clay slip, then polishing it before firing to achieve a satin-like, almost metallic finish without the use of glaze. Pierre Bayle was one of the great masters of this craft in France, creating forms of classical rigour. Michel Mars follows in this tradition: his box, with its understated and compact design, allows the polished surface to catch the light. The faint white marks, which appeared during firing, serve as a reminder of the artisanal nature of the process.
