Ibeji statuette (male)
Wood with a brown patina, brass ring
20th century
H 35 cm
A monoxyl anthropomorphic statuette depicting a male twin (Ibeji), shown standing. The conical, finely striated hairstyle evokes the characteristic crest found in certain Yoruba workshops. The face, stomach, legs and back are adorned with fine, incised ritual scarifications. The figure, depicted nude with the genitals exposed, wears a remarkable pectoral ornament, as well as bracelets on each bicep and on the left wrist. The feet are shod in a pair of delicately carved sandals. Beautiful patina, evidence of ritual use.
Carved from a single block of wood, this statuette depicts a male twin standing naked, with his genitals exposed. The conical hairstyle, finely striated, is reminiscent of the crest characteristic of certain Yoruba workshops; the face, abdomen, legs and back bear fine incised scarifications. A pectoral ornament, bracelets on the biceps and left wrist, and a pair of carved sandals complete the figure. These decorative details, which are uncommon in Ibeji statuary, attest to the status the creators wished to confer upon the deceased twin. The patina indicates ritual use.
