Basse Stittgen belongs to a generation of designers who place materials research at the heart of their practice, working with industrial or natural by-products. Lignin, the polymer that gives wood its rigidity, is largely discarded during paper production; the designer recovers it and combines it with cellulose to create a mouldable material. Picea, the Latin name for spruce, evokes this forest origin: the lamp reimagines, in a new form, the very constituents of the tree. A piece at the crossroads of design, materials science and the circular economy.
