Description
Vico Magistretti
Maralunga
A sofa with generously upholstered proportions, combining a deep seat with enveloping armrests. The upper section of each of the two backrests can be raised or lowered independently, allowing the backrest to be adjusted to suit each user’s position. The mechanism, patented by Cassina and concealed within the upholstery, utilises a bicycle chain. This distinctive articulation transforms the sofa’s silhouette whilst prioritising comfort.
Produced by Cassina, Italy — Collection 675
Designed in 1973
H72 L166 D95 cm
A graduate of the Politecnico di Milano in 1945, Vico Magistretti designed furniture and lighting for Cassina, Artemide and Oluce, characterised by clear, legible forms that were always functional. The Maralunga, created in 1973 and awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1979, is one of the most famous examples of this. Its design principle lies in a single detail: the top of each backrest can be raised or lowered independently, thanks to a mechanism concealed within the upholstery, allowing each user to adjust the level of support. An icon of Italian design, where comfort stems from a discreet technical innovation.
