Description
Kazuhide Takahama Sebastian Table Chrome-plated steel tube frame with adjustable base, round rosewood top. Prototype, subsequently produced by Simon Date of creation: 1970 H75 D120 cm Condition: wear and tear consistent with its age and use Bibliography Brera Academy of Fine Arts, ‘Dino Gavina Ultrarazionale Ultramobile’, Editrice Compositori, Milan 1998, p. 183 Fondazione Scientifica Querini Stampalia, ‘Dino Gavina, Iconic Collections of Modernism from 1950 to 1992’, Jaca Book, Milan 1992, p. 72 Japanese architect Kazuhide Takahama moved to Bologna in 1963 at the invitation of Dino Gavina, for whom he designed some of the publisher’s most iconic pieces of furniture, including the Marcel sofa. His design language combines geometric rigour and the purity of Japanese design with Italian rationalism. The Sebastian table, produced by Simon – the brand founded by Gavina in 1968 – is a fine example of this: a sleek chrome-plated steel tubular base supports a round rosewood top. This piece is a prototype predating the production run; the model is featured in both reference works dedicated to Gavina.
