Enzo Mari (1932–2020) Samos S Bowl Ceramic Driade edition in the Kosmo collection Model created in 1973 for Danese Milano Original label bearing the inscription ‘DR9902236 Samos/S’ D35 H9 cm Good original condition, a few slight marks visible in the photographs A designer and theorist, Enzo Mari spent his entire career creating objects in which rigorous design was combined with a consideration of production and use, from ‘Autoprogettazione’ to children’s jigsaw puzzles. For Danese, a Milanese manufacturer with whom he enjoyed a long-standing collaboration, he created the Samos series in 1973: ceramic pieces with simple geometric forms that challenge the archetype of the vessel. This bowl, reissued by Driade as part of the Kosmo collection, is the ‘S’ version. Its minimalist design illustrates Mari’s belief that form must arise from function and material.
