Based in Massa, at the foot of the Carrara quarries, the manufacturer Up & Up has commissioned leading architects and designers to create furniture and objects in marble. Alessandro Mendini has created the Libreria Tempietto, or ‘little temple’: a low bookcase, nearly three metres long, which evokes sacred architecture scaled down to the size of a piece of furniture. Calacatta marble, white veined with golden grey, combined with glass, gives the piece a monumental and luminous presence. A piece emblematic of Mendini’s classical irony, straddling historical reference and postmodern design.
