Description
Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret Standardised N.V. wardrobe for a bedroom Clarté Block, Geneva, c. 1932 H180 W50 D50 cm For Le Corbusier, colour is not a decorative element but an architectural tool: it alters the perception of space, brings elements forward or recedes them, warms or soothes. His ‘Architectural Polychromy’, developed in 1931, classifies colours by family and by effect. This wardrobe from the Clarté block, in a warm ochre yellow reminiscent of the ochres in this colour chart, rests on a lighter, greyish-beige base. Its vertical silhouette and flat surfaces reflect the principle of standardised storage, integrated into the very design of the flats. A testament to the synthesis between architecture, furniture and colour.
