Description
Bert & Dennis Pillow Chair Armchair Upholstered in fabric, foam and painted metal Prototype Netherlands, circa 2006–2008 H64 W60 D80 cm In good original vintage condition. The fabric shows slight signs of wear. The painted metal frame has visible paint chips, scratches and age-related wear, which is consistent with its history as a working prototype. A rare prototype of the Pillow Chair by the Dutch design duo Bert van der Grift and Dennis van der Burch, known collectively as Bert & Dennis. The design reduces the traditional lounge chair to two generously proportioned cushions, which appear to balance on a slender, white-painted metal frame. The contrast between the soft, oversized upholstery and the exposed geometric frame gives the chair its playful and instantly recognisable character. Despite its informal appearance, the seat and backrest are carefully positioned to provide a comfortable and relaxing sitting posture. This prototype is one of Bert & Dennis’s earliest experimental works. The duo began presenting designs and prototypes in 2006, before officially founding their studio in 2008. Their work is characterised by functional simplicity, understated forms and a subtle sense of humour. The armchair’s construction also reflects Dennis van der Burch’s solid expertise in upholstering major 20th-century design pieces. Crafted from a bright red fabric with a white-painted metal frame. Small original Bert & Dennis labels are attached to both cushions. A Dutch duo comprising Bert van der Grift and Dennis van der Burch, Bert & Dennis presented their first designs and prototypes in 2006, before officially founding their studio in 2008. This prototype of the Pillow Chair is one such experimental piece: the lounge chair is reduced to two generous cushions that appear to balance precariously on a slender white metal frame. The contrast between the softness of the upholstery and the geometry of the frame lends the chair a subtle sense of humour. Its construction reflects the craftsmanship of Dennis van der Burch, an upholsterer specialising in 20th-century designer furniture.
